OneNote 2016 is on life support, MS has made it clear they are going to move entirely to the UWP free app. But just because it'll be free doesn't mean you can strip out features!

OneNote is a great tool, I migrated over from Evernote (hate, hate, hate that software), and am very happy with it. I'd love to see more power and features added to it, as OneNote has tremendous potential...but if it gets its functionality 'capped' just because MS has decided not to charge for it anymore, that would be a terrible loss.

I'm an Officec 365 subscriber so I could use 2016, but am sticking with UWP because I don't want to become reliant on features that I'm at risk of losing when 2016 finally dies. Please, MS, let UWP OneNote be the powerhouse 2016 was, even if you have to put more advanced features behind a paywall connected to an Office subscription.
